Our Development Process

Building Blocks

Working with many customers on different projects, we've realized that people fall into two general categories:

  1. Those that know exactly what they want. They already have the features and vision in their head.
  2. Those who have a great idea, but don't know enough about website technology to know what can be done, how to do it, and how easy it would be to setup (and more importantly, administer).

While we always look at each customer's idea from a fresh perspective, whichever category you may fall into, we can help you get to your end goal.

Refining Your Idea

When a great idea comes to you, sometimes it can be overwhelming.  Whether you have sheets of paper with different notes jotted down, or a one-line mission statement for what you want to accomplish, we can help determine how best to implement it.

We start by going over your notes with you and selecting the optimal CMS for your website's needs.  Additionally, we'll also make recommendations on where we think improvements can be made, or features that could be great additions for a better user experience.

That's the experience and talent that we bring during our initial engagement with you.

A Phased Approach

A new website has many layers, and each is important to achieve your end goal.  After finalizing on your 'end-goals' for your new website, we break it down into phases of how the site should be developed.  Each phase generally takes from 2-8 weeks, depending on full scope.

Phase I

The easiest way to determine what's a part of this phase is by asking: "What do you want from the day you launch the site?"  While more features can be implemented later, this is the core of the site and the 'must-haves'.  This is enough for you to start getting traffic, getting users, and start making income (if applicable).  This is a fully usable and feature-rich website.

This phase always includes the CMS setup, which allows you to create your static web content, a blog, or news articles.  It will also generally include a few of the following features: forums, community features (enhanced user profiles, user-to-user communication, etc), event calendar, or any other core features you require.

Future Phases

Each additional phase adds new features and allows you to grow accustomed to what has been implemented, get user feedback, and to expand.  By not overloading you with a monstrous, overwhelming website, this gives you time to adjust and understand the full-flexibility of your new and improved website.

Site Setup

Don't worry about that!  We'll setup your site on one of our development servers and you can watch it develop.  Then, when Phase I is complete, and you're ready to launch, we'll move the site to your hosting provider of choice!  Even better, we leave the development site up and running so that additional phasing in of features can take place without interrupting your live site.

Training

While a CMS makes administering your website a snap, we'll make sure you're comfortable with every aspect of the site.  By creating tutorial videos which take you through every step of creating a new page, blog entry, or whatever features you have, you'll always be able to reference them later.
