Security Upgrades and Patching
Open-source platforms are wonderful environments because of the quick pace of development and large user-base willing to contribute to create more powerful features. However, open-source also means that malicious people can determine flaws in the code quicker, and take advantage of them more easily when found. If you have a CMS that hasn't been upgraded in over a year, you could be at severe risk.
For example, Joomla 1.5.0, released in January of 2008 had 6 patches released during it's first 6 months with most addressing low-to-moderate security vulnerabilities. Drupal 6.0, released in February, has had 4 such patches over a similar period. This isn't to say that these technologies are inherently insecure or less-safe than closed-source alternatives, just that, like any software, you need to be careful. The fortunate thing for open-source software is that vulnerability fixes are released quickly due to the 'many-eyes' approach. With closed-source software (Adobe Air, Microsoft ASP, Microsoft Silverlight, etc), the trend is that patches are released slower and vulnerabilities are exposed longer for websites using these solutions.
Patching a system usually takes 1-2 days, and does not interrupt your current website's functionality. |
