Quick Background:
I have resurrected a site from the dead (full server backup) which has a database with Jomsocial I need to keep. Ideally, I would like to have just installed Joomla 3, then reinstall the database and then JFBconnect from scratch with all the software updated. That appears to not be an option, so I need to get this copy of JFBconnect up to date along with Jomsocial, Joomla and JV Link Directory,

Problem 1:
I am not able to "Log in with Facebook" it goes to a blank page. Then when I click the back button and click the login button again it logins.

Problem 2: When trying to update through the link on the admin panel I get this error"
"Downloading the update package failed. Make sure that your temp-directory is writable, that you have enabled Joomla!'s FTP options in your site's Global Configuration, and that you are using a valid SourceCoast Subscription Key."

My temp directory does say it is writable, my SourceCoast Subscription Key is valid, but when I try to set my FTP Settings to on I get this error :
"JFTP: :write: Bad response Could not save data. Error: Could not write to the configuration file"

Problem 3:
- When trying to update "JFBConnect for Joomla" I get a " JFolder::create: Infinite loop detected Unable to create destination Update path does not exist Error updating COM_INSTALLER_TYPE_TYPE_." error.

Problem 4:
- When trying to update "SourceCoast Extensions Library for JFBConnect and JLinked - Compatible with JFBConnect component 5.0" I get a "Unknown Archive type Update path does not exist Error updating COM_INSTALLER_TYPE_TYPE_." error

QUESTIONS:
If I just overwrite the JFBconnect install with a fresh copy, will it in anyway break my site? Will it resolve any or all of the issues above?

Do you have any other suggestions throughout my migration adventure that might make it easier for me?

Kind Regards,
Jeff

JomSocial Version: Version: 2.2.5

Problem 1:

If you're on JFBConnect v4.2.5, I'd worry about upgrading first before you worry about login issues. 4.2.5 is very, very old, and likely has some issues with changes in how Facebook works.

Problem 2:

I'd remove the FTP credentials from the Global Configuration area altogether. Those FTP credentials should only be used when Joomla/Apache are setup in a way where they can't write directly to the filesystem. Hopefully, your system isn't as restricted and the FTP layer for writing files isn't necessary at all.

Problem 3: & Problem 4:

How are you trying to update when you do this? Is this just installing the zip file from this site? If you're trying to use the Joomla Installer -> Update area and just check the box and click "Update", that will not work. Your version of JFBConnect and Joomla are too old.

What I would recommend doing is:
* Update your Joomla version to the latest, 2.5.24 (I believe). All the extensions your using should still work since your on the latest release of Joomla 2.5, and it will include a lot of bug-fixes from the really old version of Joomla 2.5.11 you're using.
* Download the JFBConnect.zip file from this site and use the Joomla Installation manager to install it. JFBConnect should automatically upgrade all of it's tables and files when you install this way to work with changes in the 5.x and 6.x releases.
* Then, start working on the upgrade to Joomla 3.x or upgrading your other extensions.

You should *not* try to just copy over files from the latest zip file to your site. You need to go through the installation process to run our upgrade scripts.

I hope that helps, but if you have any other questions, or run into any issues, just let me know.

Thanks,
Alex

Wow, this must be your baby as your working on the weekend.. :)

Thank-You for your help. After updating to Joomla! version, 2.5.24, then overwriting the installation, then installing JFBConnect Version: 6.1.1, everything seems to be working, including the Login, at the moment. :)

One other question. If I remember right, there seemed to be a preference of having the SSL on the domain with the "www." than with not. Is there any difference to this and is one better than the other? I currently have my SSL installed on the domain without the "www.".

For anyone interested, I am not sure if that made a difference overwriting the Joomla! installation but it did give me a different error for problem 3 and 4 above. Instead it gave me a "Error connecting to the server: 403 - ACCESS FORBIDDEN". I am not sure if this resolved that error as I have nothing to update anymore but my issues above do seem to be resolved.

Kind Regards,
Jeff

Our Joomla extensions are our baby and our business. It's what we do :)

First, I'm glad to hear that it seems like you made a lot of progress and things are starting to come together. I'm also happy to hear that our upgrade process from 4.2 -> 6.1 is intact. We don't really test the whole process from that old, we just test the 'pieces' of each minor upgrade for the last few releases.

One other question. If I remember right, there seemed to be a preference of having the SSL on the domain with the "www." than with not. Is there any difference to this and is one better than the other? I currently have my SSL installed on the domain without the "www.".

The preference has nothing to do with SSL. In general, we simply recommend that you don't allow your site to be accessed over both www and non-www. Some social networks will *only* work for one sub-domain (www and non-www are different sub-domains), which can cause you issues. Additionally, when the same page of your site can be accessed over both, it splits your Like count, google SEO and other things because the social networks/google don't know that they are the same page, so they judge and rank them independently. In essence, you're actually competing with yourself when you do that.

I hope that your moving along nicely now, but if you need anything else, just let us know.

Finally, if you haven't already, please consider leaving a rating and review for JFBConnect, or our support, on the Joomla Extension Directory. It certainly isn't required, but is very appreciated:

Thanks, so just to clarify, No, one is not better or more preferred than the other. Just stick to one and use it, correct?

I just got my SSL certificate and it was installed on the domain without the "www.". The host may be able to fix that if having the "www." added if it is considered better than the other, is why I am asking.

Jeff

Correct. There's probably some arguments on SEO forums somewhere about one being better than the other, but there's no definitive reason why any would be better. It all comes down to the content on pages.

Personally, nowadays, I'd recommend non-www on sites. If I could go back 6 years and setup this site without www, I would.. but there's no way I'm changing it now as we'd lose lots of search engine rankings and Like counts. Not gonna happen. The reasons I'd go non-www is because:
* www still works, it just redirects to non-www. That's important for those that feel every site has to start with www :)
* non-www is shorter, easier to post/link to and read.

Of course, our business cards say "sourcecoast.com" because that works.. but again, proves the point as to why I'd remove it if I could.

As always, if you have any other questions, just let me know.

Thanks,
Alex
