I've never seen anything like that! How are you including the Like button? When it's gone, that goes away completely? The code is on the page itself and not something being injected by Javascript after the page loads. Definitely confusion, but all I can guess is that there's something wrong with the way you're including the Like button.

One other thing to try is disabling the JFBCSystem plugin. That should show the raw {JFBCLike} tag on the page. Try that and let us know if the weird characters go away as well.

Very glad to hear that wasn't a problem with JFBConnect. Didn't think it was as that was definitely strange, but you never know.
