Recurly and Joomla Integration

We've been consulting on a website which integrates Recurly into Joomla and wanted to get feedback from our users on the possibilities. The website is for a Southwest Florida Home Watch service company. Recurly is a software-as-a-service (Saas) subscription payments platform which specializes in monthly payments. They have a rich API which we did minor integration with, and now we're looking for feedback on whether this is something other Joomla users would be interested in using.

Recurly

Recurly sells itself as an easy and powerful subscription SaaS solution. It's developed to be a very simple way to setup a subscription based service where billing is completely automated. The basic process for setting up a payent based service is:

  • Create new subscription types for your service
    • Set the recurring period: weekly, monthly, bi-yearly, etc.
    • Give it a name, description and other information that users can understand
  • Create 'add-ons' that a user could choose from. For the home watch service, some examples are mail forwarding or car check that a customer may want
  • Create coupons that can be restricted on to specific users, number of users, and other details

Once your subscription is setup, you can setup and administer your customers through the Recurly interface. You can create customers, add subscriptions for them, and even enter their credit card information to begin charges immediately.

Robust API

Recurly has a very easy to use web interface, but one of it's big selling points is a robust API. Using calls from your website, you could create new subscriptions types, new user accounts, payments, coupons, and manage every aspect of your Recurly account. It's this interface that we, very lightly, interfaced with. Specifically, we created some modules to show a subscription form to users where they can sign up for the home watch service. In the example below, a user can subscribe to the Punta Gorda House Watch service:

What's next?

Well, that's a good question. Right now, we're unsure how much further we want to develop Recurly integration for Joomla. There's a lot of possibilities, like adding users that subscribe to a specific Joomla user group, displaying purchases and invoices within Joomla, and other automation and pulling of data from Recurly into Joomla. We just don't know if there's a market or interest for this type of functionality.

That's where your feedback is helpful. Are you interested in Recurly integration for Joomla? Have you used Recurly before, and if so, did you like it? Why or why not?
